Montezuma's Revenge "De Montezuma Code"

October 19th 2007 - Theater Lochem

The news that Montezuma's Revenge has decided to stop at the end of 2007 hit me pretty hard. I've known the group since I was a little kid and thinking about not seeing them in the theaters again after 2007, feels pretty strange. Moreover, the fanclub Anita and I started in the summer of 2006, after the old fanclub had quit, was just doing so well! But, unfortunately, all good things come to an end someday. After we saw "De Montezuma Code" two weeks ago, in Zwolle, I decided that couldn't be my last show, so I ordered tickets and today we are in Lochem to see this show (De Montezuma Code) for the seventh time... And still, I can't get enough of it. Sitting there, listening to songs I know I will néver hear again, because there's no album of this show... I enjoy every moment, record every note in my memory, every move, every joke - although I already know them by heart. Will this be the last time I see Montezuma's Revenge in a theater? Of course, there's still the fanclubday in december - and I'm looking forward to it a lot. But apart from that - will I see them again?

The show today is very good. The average age of the audience is probably above 40, but the people are all very enthusiastic and attentive. People laugh when they're supposed to laugh and they're quiet when they're supposed to be quiet. I'm always impressed that there's an applause after every song, except for Inspiratie. The song makes such an impression on people that nobody even dares to move after it. At the same time, you can feel a slight uncomfortable uncertainty in the audience and it almost seems like the audience heaves an inaudible sigh of relieve, when the next song starts. This is how it should be, how it's meant to be. Fortunately, most of the show is not this hard and there are many songs where I laugh out loud. For instance during Stil in mij, where Bert tries to hide himself in the audience and where the other four hand out papers in the audience with a ladybird printed on it (the ladybird is the symbol of the Dutch Foundation Against Senseless Violence). When they finally get hold of Bert and pull him on stage again, Menno and Sanne instruct the audience to crumple the paper to a ball and throw it towards Bert. Suddenly, the attentive and nice people in the audience change into an agressive crowd and Bert is being bombarded with paper balls. Especially from the balcony, this is a very funny sight, seeing all the paper balls flying through the air towards the stage. Speaking about senseless violence...

One of the songs in this show I love most, is Dieper ondergronds (original: Deeper underground by Jamiroquai). The first tones are just terrific, I love it and I could hear it over and over again. It's such a pity the recordings from last year were stolen from the sound technicians car... I want to hear this song much more often! The same thought crosses my mind several times tonight. There are so many songs I would love to have on a cd. Thriller is one of those songs. Every time I hear it, I love it more. The choreography and the singing is all perfect. Soms sneeuwt het in april nog (original: Sometimes it snows in April by Prince) is also one of my favorites. The song touches people in the heart, and for me personally the quiet part with only Pauls voice causes goosebumps and it makes me shiver - in a positive way. Wow... *sigh*

What will the Netherlands be without Montezuma's Revenge? I will miss them so much! Pauls immense deep voice, Sanne's great vocal percussion and his beautiful voice, Menno and Bert, the crazy duo with great voices and dancing, Hans with his big friendly smile, beautiful voice and wide range... I've always loved their creative minds, their original ideas to make every new theater show completely different from the ones before. The wide variety in songs, in atmosphere, in choreographies and attributes - it all made Montezuma's Revenge worth visiting time after time. I've spent so many hours in the theater with them, but not enough... I've never thought it would end this year.

This can't be my last show tonight! I've got to see them again, now it's still possible. I'll order tickets for the very final show ever, in Franeker - yes, we'll be there!! :)
