Montezuma's Revenge Pop Art

December 8th 2004 - Kulturhus Borne

A new show from Montezuma's Revenge. I was very curious what it would be like. Tijs Krammer has left the group, and Menno Stuifmeel is the newest member. Always exciting when there is someone new in the group.

I was very happy to have permission to make some photos during the show :D Though I didn't make any pictures while Martin snatched the camera away and made all the pictures himself. Well OK *g* Before the show started we were a bit nervous while there were so few people in the hall... Entering the theatre made clear it was a very small theatre, fit up to 200-250 (?) people. But, Martin counted, there were 'only' 100 people! It almost felt like a private concert, but it wasn't (as we would experience later that night :P). The show started with Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful". I really love this song, and as an a cappella arrangement it sounds beautiful! And right from the start I knew: Menno is great :P

So the show went on and turned out to be very humorous. It was really so different than "Hits Again" which we saw in 2002. The puppetry part was super. I haven't laughed this much for a long time! My cheeks were aching from laughing :P

New element to the show next to puppetry was clappetry... eh... well, how to name it? (manual music?? clap-art?? rhythmic music by hand?? *gg*) Anyway, it think it's very hard and I was really amazed how they do it. Also new, and beautifully mixed in the show, were some little magic tricks. Very surprising! All in all it was a very varied show.

In this show most of the songs the Zuma's sing are covers, like "Angels" by Robbie Williams (with a cool sing along part for three voices! haha), "If I get you alone" by Thicke (wow...), "I'll be there for you" from Friends, "If I ain't got you" by Alicia Keys, "Sign 'O' The Times" by Prince, and many many more. Too much to remember (maybe we should see the show again??). As far as I know all the arrangements are made by Montezuma's Revenge themselves. Really good!

The show ended and we all went to the hall, where Hans was selling the newest album. We had a little chat and asked if it was ok to make a picture of the whole group. Well, if we were patient enough to wait for the other men who were tidying up, we could :D So we waited and one by one the Zuma-men came to the hall and they signed our booklet. We had a little chat again and when all five were there, they posed for the camera and suddenly started singing!!! The hall was almost empty, so THIS is what a private concert feels like :P Thank you Zuma!! They sang a Christmas carol, probably one of the songs they will sing during the next two weeks, when they are doing 19 X-mas shows in Dortmund, Germany. It sounded so great!

After this fantastic evening we almost got locked up in the parking garage... but eventually got home safely :P The album sounds good and I can recommend it to everybody! And go to their show, you'll laugh your head off! For tourdates and other information visit Zuma's website.

@the Zuma's: Thanks for the permission to make photos, thanks for the great show and thanks for the surprising Christmas carol in the end!
